The Tampa Bay Buccaneers went to work in the offseason. Tampa Bay did an incredible job bringing in talented players to help this team become a winner in 2013. The Bucs’ defense was one of the worst in the league in 2012 in terms of stopping the pass. Bucs’ fans saw way too many leads get blown late in games due to the horrific pass defense. It was time for the Bucs to do a major makeover with the defense.
The Bucs did just that, bringing in one of the elite cornerbacks in the league in Darrelle Revis. This was a huge offseason move, but Revis is coming off an injury, as this is the only question mark concerning Revis. Most know however, that he can be a real staple in the secondary when healthy. The Bucs added more help in the secondary by picking up safety Dashon Goldson from San Francisco. Goldson will tremendously help the secondary as he known for being a punishing hitter.
The Bucs’ main priorities in the draft were defensive players that could help improve Tampa Bay’s porous pass defense. The Bucs were first in stopping the run last year and last in stopping the pass. Tampa Bay took Johnthan Banks in the second round of the draft. Banks, a cornerback from Mississippi State, has tons of talent and athleticism, not to mention a huge upside. Banks will likely play with Mark Barron, Revis and Goldson in the secondary. This secondary is much improved from last year. Mason Foster was an absolute stud for the Bucs last year and the team is hopeful that he can continue his great play at linebacker.
Tampa Bay made a few offensive moves in the offseason as well. Tampa Bay drafted a quarterback from North Carolina State, Mike Glennon and a running back from Miami, Mike James. Tampa Bay also added some lightning speed with the addition of Jeff Demps acquired through a trade. The Buccaneers have offensive linemen Carl Nicks and Davin Joseph returning from injury and this is definitely going to help the offense move the ball downfield.
This is quarterback Josh Freeman’s contract year. Hopefully he can prove that he is the future for this franchise and organization. This should again be the potent offense that was seen last year with all the weapons surrounding Freeman in Doug Martin, Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams. Few are expecting Freeman to take this team to the Super Bowl but fans need to see his ability to run the offense, make correct decisions and produce victories so Tampa Bay can get back to the postseason.
Tampa Bay should be a much better all-around team than they were last year. If Freeman can step his game up this year, the Bucs should get back to the playoffs with a new and improved defense. Coach Greg Schiano is entering his second season as head coach and he will have the players ready to play. Bucs’ fans should definitely be excited for this upcoming 2013 NFL season as training camp is right around the corner.
