MIAMI GARDENS – One night after Anibal Sanchez took a no-hitter into the ninth inning, the Colorado Rockies bounced back to knock off the Florida Marlins 3-1 on Saturday night. The Rockies scored off Marlins’ starter Javier Vazquez in the top of the first with a Troy Tulowitzki single that scored Devin Fowler. Fowler’s ninth-inning single on Friday night broke up Anibal Sanchez’s no-hit bid. Florida tied the game in the bottom of the third at 1-1on a Chris Coghlan sacrifice fly that drove home John Buck.
The score remained tied until the top of the sixth when Colorado was able to manufacture a pair of runs off of Vazquez. Ty Wigginton hit a sacrifice fly to right that brought in Todd Helton and moved Seth Smith to third. Rockies’ starting pitcher Jason Hammel suicide squeezed Smith home on the very next pitch as Colorado took a 3-1 lead. The Rockies’ bullpen shut down the Marlins for 2 1/3 innings as it did not allow Florida a single baserunner. Hammel picked up the win going 6 2/3 innings allowing just one run and seven hits. Vazquez took the loss for Florida despite having his best outing as a Marlin. The Rockies and Marlins will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday.
